Loafer 2013 – Movie Review

Nepali movie ‘Loafer’ was released on December 6, 2013 in theaters all over Nepal. The movie could manage to create a good hype in media because the producer Chhabi Raj Ojha. Chhabi, who had been continuously working with Rekha Thapa for the last decade, had replaced Rekha with a new actress Rajani KC in ‘Loafer’. In addition to that, the movie is also the first movie of Chhabi Raj Ojha, that is especially targeted to multiplex audiences. The movie directed by Aditya Bikram Lamsal features artists Aryan Sigdel, Dayahang Rai, Rajani KC, and Kamal Mani Nepal in leading roles.

Story:
‘Loafer’ is a story of Bhanta played by Dayahang Rai.  Bhanta joins two friends and one driver drinking wine in a bar. The party went on for the the whole night. In the next morning, they found an unconscious girl in their car. A news that the the girl, who happened to be the daughter of a Minister, kidnaped by a gang was published in every major newspapers.

The news and the unconscious girl left  Bhanta and other three worried. They planned to take girl to a farm house at Godawari. They were supposed to wait there for the girl to become conscious and they could send her back to her home. But when they reach to Godawari, they changed the plan. Now, the girl is really kidnapped by  Bhanta and the driver. On another side, an inspector, Sigdel,  investigating this case finds out the whereabouts of the girl. But, when Sigdel reaches the farm house, at Godavari, the real suspense of the movie unfolds. To know what the real suspense of the movie and the story of Bhunte, you can visit one of the almost 100 theatres the movie is running in.

Strength and Weakness:
‘Loafer’ has a very good story to start with. The story appeals to the the audience of multiplex theaters. Popular star cast of the movie is another major plus point of the movie. The audience of the city areas and multiplexes know the artists well. The director Aditya Bikram Lamsal however has been failed to present the excellent story and well known actors in an effective way.

‘Loafer’ is a good example of how a good story concept and good actors are not enough to win the heart of multiplexes audiences. The movie has failed in irritating ways for the audience of city areas. The overall presentation and background music do not seem fresh. Most of the scenes of the movie seem like stale scenes that people have watched before. The action scenes and songs don’t relate to the flow of the story.

In a few scenes, Kamal Mani Nepal has been successful in makes the audience laugh with his dialogue delivery style and facial expression. In a lot of scenes, the movie will give a feel of ‘Loot‘.  But, weak screenplay and weak presentation has ruined the good story of the movie.

Loud background music might work for the single-screen audience, but it doesn’t work well in multiplexes.

Star Cast:
The lead actor of the movie, Dayahang Rai is a good actor. But, in ‘Loafer’ he doesn’t have anything new to offer to the audience.  The movie revolves around the character  Bhanta but the character hasn’t been able to win the heart of audiences.

Aryan Sigdel, featured as inspector Sigdel sounds and acts like the police officers usually seen in most of the Bollywood movies. Such a character is so common in movies, the audiences can’t find anything new in Sigdel’s role. In essence – Aryan Sigdel and Dayahang Rai can perform much better than what they have done in ‘Loafer’.

The lead actress Rajani KC got a lot of free publicity because of the fact that she replaced Rekha Thapa in one of of Chhabi Raj Ojha’s film. Although she got a good publicity, the entry hasn’t helped her much as she doesn’t have a role that can prove her talents. Rajani seem to have done an special appearance. She hardly delivers five lines of dialogue and for acting she hasn’t been able to justify the expression of a kidnapped girl.

Kamal Mani Nepal’s performance is funny. Although his dialogues are funny he could have done more.

In essence, the director had failed to use the full potential of the actors strength of actors to make it a good movie and please the audience of multiplexes.

Conclusion:
The story and concept of ‘Loafer’ is very good. Chhabi has done a good attempt to woo young audience with good story and artists.

But, the presentation failed miserably. Chhabi Raj Ojha has failed in catering the audience of multiplex theaters by ‘Loafer’. It seems, he is not yet ready to appeal to the young generation. The director has failed in presentation and utilizing the artist’s potential.

My recommendation: Forget the movie and save your money and time.

The movie features the cinematography of Deepak Bajracharya, fight direction of Himal KC, music direction of Suresh Adhikari, story of Dinesh Neupane, and script of Dinesh Neupane.

Crew Background
Movie features Aryan Sigdel as the lead actor and he is also a face value of ‘Madhumash’. Actress Pooja Sharma is starting her filmy career in this movie. Before starting acting, Pooja was engaged in media as a model and has done some music videos. ‘Madhumash’ is her first movie as a lead actress.

‘Madhumash’ is the director Sudarshan Thapa’s fourth movie with Aryan Sigdel. The debut movie of both Sudarshan and Aryan ‘Mero Euta Saathi Chha’ was loved by the audience. After the success of the first movie, none of Sudarshan’s later movies were appreciated by the audiences. Sudarshan’s last movie ‘Dhanda’ didn’t do a good business. So, Sudarshan needs this movie to succeed and help him to recover his lost charm.

Movie and media response

The second venture of  Friday Films Pvt. Ltd, ‘Madhumas’ is produced jointly by Baburam Dahal and Sudarshan Thapa. The movie made on the story of husband and wife is a social drama. Prior to it’s release, ‘Madhumas’ has got and average response from media. Both Aryan and Sudarshan’s most of recent movies haven’t done good business. So, the success of the movie largely depends on the positive word of mouth publicity and feedback from audiences.

"Maun" Suspense Nepali Movie 2013– Movie Review

Nepali movie ‘Maun’ was released all over the theatres in Nepal on September 27, 2013. The movie is jointly produced by Nabin Gauli and Suraj Bhusal, the director. Maun features Arpan Thapa and Namrata Shrestha in lead role. In addition to being the lead actor, Arpan has also written the story of the suspense love story of two deaf people.

Story:
‘Maun’ starts at a library where a couple buy a book titled ‘Maun’ written by an other named Barsha (Namrata Shrestha). The couple also meet writer in the café of library where, they reveal the story of Barsha. Barsha is a mute, deaf girl who had returned back to Nepal from United States and meets another deaf guy called Iman (Arpan Thapa) in a personality development workshop. As the time passed, Iman and Barsha fall in love.

When Barsha’s father returned from United States the twist and turns start to happen in their love story. I don’t want to ruin your movie watching experience by saying all about what happened to Iman and Barsha and how they face problems.

Strength and Weakness:
Before the release of Maun, the director had said that ‘Maun’ is a simple love story of two deaf people with suspense in the story. And as the director said ‘Maun’ is a simple suspense love story. Two deaf people and their chemistry are presented in sweet manner. The performance of the actors is another plus point of the movie. The background music of Rohit Shakya is good and it flows with the sign language of deaf people.

The songs of Sugam Pokharel and Sanup Poudel are melodious. As the lead actors are deaf, they interact in sign language and the audience left to understand them or read subtitle to understand the love chemistry between the actors. The communication of deaf people look nature and the flow of the movie doesn’t let the audience to feel bored.

Arpan Thapa‘s story and screenplay is appropriate and to the mark. The movie has a good scope for being better if the post interval part were tied in properly. The movie’s suspense and ending may not please all the viewers. Some of the out-of-sync scenes like, a rich and family girl trying to steal a simple dress might not feel appropriate. Story and the plot on post interval part of the movie could have been made better. Even if there are places it could be made better, the movie itself will not disappoint the audiance.

Star Cast:
Maun’s specialty is its star cast. Both the lead actors Arpan Thapa and Namrata Shrestha have done their roles very well. Both Arpan and Namrata have exceled in the new and difficult role. They have transformed themselves as deaf mute people and the conversation in sign language also feels natural.

As an actress, Namrata Shrestha looks beautiful, as always. Arpan Thapa’s facial expression and the way expressing emotions are appreciable. Another character Boke (a deaf character and a friend of Iman) has also done good job and makes you smile whenever he appears on the screen. Boke’s expressions are very funny to make you laugh.

Conclusion:
The movie ‘Maun’ is a simple and sweet love story of two deaf people. There isn’t any additional masala type of content. It is a big relief in the time when every movie feature contents copied from other movies and are full of sex scenes.

My recommendation – You should watch the movie !

HOSTEL Nepali Movie 2013- Movie Review

Nepali movie ‘Hostel’ was released on August 30 in theaters all over Nepal. The movie is produced by Sunil Rawal under Durgish Films. The movie features the friendship of three characters played by Anmol KC, Salon Basnet and Gaurav Pahadi. Actresses Rista Basnet and Prakriti Shrestha are also featured in important characters in the movie. Although the movie is advertised as a college love story, it is more about friendship and relationships. The movie is directed by Hemraj BC.

Story
The movie is the story of Aditya Bikram Rana (Anmol KC), Junge (Salon Basnet) and Shree (Gaurav Pahadi) – three medical college students living in a hostel. Aditya is from a rich family, Junge is from a medium income family and Shree’s background is not clear in the movie. They go through every ups and downs a young student goes through hostel life. There is love, tragedy, betrayal, friendship, family relationship, classroom, hostel warden and so on.

Producer
The producer of ‘Hostel’ Sunil Rawal was successful in winning the hearts of viewers in his debut movie ‘Saayad‘. Based on the the initial crowd in the theaters, ‘Hostel’ is going to be much more successful than his previous movie. In addition to producing good movies, he is also known to debut new talents in Nepali film industry. He introduced Samyam Puri, the son director Narayan Puri in the last movie. In his second movie he experimented in a huge way by introducing some high profile star sons and daughters in ‘Hostel’.

Star Cast
Although Anmol Kc, the son of actor Bhuwan KC, was featured in a very short role in ‘Sathi Ma Timro‘, ‘Hostel’ is his debut movie in leading role. With the success of the movie, Anmol is believed to be the next big star in the Nepali movie industry. In the movie, Anmol is featured as a son of a rich father and is the central character in the movie. He is a bit disconnected with his family, often ignoring his mother’s call.

Salon Basnet, the son of actor/director Shovit Basnet is featured as a student from a medium class family. The family had to borrow money to pay for his tuition. He is careless of his study and is humorous in the movie. In the first half of the movie Salon gets a lot of focus in an entertaining way. In the past, Salon had worked as child actor in a lot of movies and he had also acted in ‘Janzeer’.

The role of Gaurav Pahadi, the son of actor Tika Pahadi, is not that well defined. He is featured in a serious character. Gaurav had debuted as the lead actor in ‘Manjari’.

Strength and Weakness
The movie is strong in portraying the life of college going youth, their hardships and problems in an entertaining way. The attempt to present the college life is a challenge the director has fulfilled successfully. The youth actors have done a very good in portraying the characters they represent. The movie is going to liked by youth as some might see themselves in one of the characters in the movie.

The weakest point in the movie is the script or the presentation of the story. Unrealistic scenes like the MBBS students get to wear stethoscope on the first day of college, or unrealistic dialogues, lack of coordination between the dialogue and actions are some of the things the director has overlooked.

Conclusion
If you have ever been through a college life, there might be something entertaining in the movie to go for. ‘Hostel’ is an entertaining relief in a long list of failures. It has a potential to be successful in spite of some weakness.

I recommend going to the movie for entertainment although I wish, the script were written in better manner.
